Charlotte Riley proves an inspiration to school children |
TEESSIDE actress Charlotte Riley returned to her former school to inspire pupils to achieve beyond their wildest dreams.
Charlotte, 28, star of TV’s Wuthering Heights, and more recently DCI Banks, was the guest of honour at Teesside High’s annual prize-giving Speech Day.
As well as handing out more than 100 awards, the actress, from Thorpe Thewles, made a speech to a packed audience of students and parents.
She told them that once you can get over the fear of failing, you can achieve more than you ever thought you could.
Charlotte, who is engaged to Inception star Tom Hardy, recently made a return to the Eaglescliffe school to surprise her former teachers.
She was invited to speak at Speech Day by the school’s headmaster Thomas Packer.
Charlotte said: “It is an absolute honour to be asked to come back. I am quite nervous. Everybody says you are an actor so you must be used to be talking publicly, but when you are acting you pretend to be a character.
“It is really great to see all the old teachers and there are lots of people I was at school with here.
“I’ve come back on a really special day and I’ve been really looking forward to it since Mr Packer asked me to come back. I mainly want to focus on the fact Teesside High has a really great tradition of nurturing students and the students tend to do really well because of that.
“One of the things I’d really like to say is that as an actor, you have to not be scared of getting things wrong and failing. When you are embarrassed about getting things wrong or failing, that’s when creativity really takes place.
“If you can get over the fear of failing, you can really achieve amazing things.
Charlotte admitted she was not always on her best behaviour as a pupil during speech days.
“But I think I won a drama cup once,” she said.
“Speech days are always good fun, it’s one of those days you can tell makes a difference in school.”
This year has been another busy and successful year for Charlotte.
“I did DCI Banks which was great fun, and I’m writing something at the moment, with my writing partner Tiffany Wood, set in the North-east.”

Charlotte Riley Birthday Project |
In just over a month,our lovely Charlotte will be turning 29. I have decided to open a birthday project for her,where all her fans from over the world can submit something which will then be turned into a big book full of birthday messages for her,I will then put this all together and mail it off to her. I would love to have as many people as possible participate in this so she has something really wonderful from her fans on her birthday,she deserves it!

So what did you all think of the first part of DCI Banks: Aftermath that aired on ITV1 last night? So far It seems it’s got mixed reviews but I actually enjoyed it! Although it was a bit darker than I imagined it was another wonderful performance from Charlotte.Am very much looking forward to the next part which airs Next Monday (4th October) at 9pm on ITV so don’t miss it! Charlotte Riley confirms Engagement to Tom Hardy |
British actress CHARLOTTE RILEY has confirmed reports she’s engaged to actor TOM HARDY.
The pair, who met while filming a TV adaption of Wuthering Heights last year (09), sparked speculation they are set to wed after Riley was spotted with a diamond on her ring finger at a red carpet event in July (10).
And now the 28 year old has revealed she is due to walk down the aisle with the Bronson star – although no date has yet been set.
She tells the Sunday Express magazine, “Yes, we are engaged. We just got on well right from the start, to be honest, and had an immediate understanding of each other.”
Hardy was previously married to Sarah Ward and has a son, Louis, with his ex-girlfriend Rachael Speed.
