Cristiano Ronaldo’s legs worth $144m

Cristiano Ronaldo’s thighs of steel have been insured by Real Madrid for a staggering 100 million euros (or U.S. $144 million).

Real Madrid is attempting to protect themselves in case Cristiano, 24, ever gets seriously injured during a soccer match, according to Spanish newspaper El Mundo.

Ronaldo Injury Hurts Club Finances

While the sum may sound extravagant, the amount realistically quantifies Cristiano’s dollar value to Real Madrid in terms of market and monetary income. In June, Real Madrid shelled out a stunning $131 million transfer fee to acquire the Portuguese international winger from Manchester United. That amount (which was only the transfer fee) does not include Cristiano’s lofty salary of over $18.7 million a year.

The insuring of Ronaldo’s legendary pins comes shortly after Czech footballer Zdenek Grygera delivered a vicious kick to Cristiano’s leg near the knee during a recent friendly.

While Ronaldo was given a clean bill of health by club doctors, the potentially damaging injury underscored the soccer phenom’s huge financial value to Real Madrid. Cristiano’s popularity impacts the club’s advertising contracts, stadium ticket sales and merchandising revenue.

Interestingly, Ronaldo had indicated he was looking forward to playing in Spain because the style of football there was less combative than in England.

“Football in England is different; it is more physical,” said Cristiano. “There are some teams who know they can’t compete with you on a football level, so they just kick you. It’s frustrating and something needs to be done to protect the skillful players, because one day someone will get seriously hurt.”

‘Undisputed Best Player’

Ronaldo, who played with Manchester United from 2003 to 2009, scored a staggering 118 goals for United in 292 appearances. What sets Cristiano apart from other players is his consistency and peak athletic form, said United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

“That’s one of the things [Ronaldo] has above all other players: He was never injured, he always played. He never missed training,” said Ferguson. “His contribution as a goal threat is unbelievable. His stats are incredible. He is easily the best player in the world.”

Manchester United Have A Ploy To Keep Cristiano Ronaldo

The Cristiano Ronaldo-Manchester United-Real Madrid soap opera finally looked all but over right on the last day of 2008, appropriately, after the Portuguese sensation himself publicly declared that he wanted to remain at Old Trafford.

But the feud that has been brewing between the recently crowned Club World Cup champions and the Madrid-affiliated press shows no sign of dying down, after Marca uncovered a campaign by United to ensure Ronaldo would have no reason to swap the Theatre of Dreams for the Santiago Bernabéu.

The sceptical Spanish paper believes that after manager Sir Alex Ferguson had convinced Ronaldo to stay at United in July, he ordered all those associated with the club to do two things: discredit Real Madrid’s image while continually heaping praise on the superstar Portuguese.

Marca booms that Ferguson himself has taken care of all the the bad-mouthing, while the club’s official website has spent every month since the start of the new season awarding some form of accolade or another to Ronaldo.

It would seem that Los Blancos themselves have already moved on from the whole debacle by focusing their resources on other transfer targets, but some of the press in Spain, on the other hand, are still finding it difficult to let the matter go. {source: goal.com}

Cristiano Ronaldo Scored!

Cristiano Ronaldo scored in Manchester United’s last game.

Accoring to Darren Fletcher, “It was great to see Ronaldo come back and score again,” said the Scotland midfielder. “He is a fantastic player and his goalscoring record over the last couple of seasons has been ridiculous. It would be asking a lot of him to match or equal that but we know he is capable of 20 goals a season, which is an incredible return in itself.”

Nereida Gallardo talked to The Mirror about her relationship with Ronaldo, you can read about all those subjects at RonaldoWORLD.net

Another Award for Cristiano Ronaldo

Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo has been voted Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers’ Association.

The 23-year-old Portugal international – who last week was named the Professional Footballers’ Association Player of the Year – topped the poll of journalists ahead of Liverpool striker Fernando Torres and Portsmouth goalkeeper David James.

It is the second season in succession Ronaldo has received the accolade, now in its 61st year. Former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry was the last man to collect the FWA award twice in a row, from 2003 and 2004.

Chairman of the FWA, Paul Hetherington, said: “Ronaldo’s award is no surprise after his brilliant form this season and incredible goal-scoring record – 38 at the moment – and he is, of course, essentially a winger.

“Cristiano was an overwhelming winner and, given his age, he has the potential and ability to dominate this award for years in an unprecedented way.”

Ronaldo – who has helped take United to within touching distance of the Premier League title as well as the Champions League final in Moscow – will receive his award at the FWA’s gala dinner at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London on May 15. sportinglife
