Lots of new castings for The Conspirator:

Justin Long is joining James McAvoy and Robin Wright Penn in “The Conspirator,” the historical drama that Robert Redford is directing.

“Conspirator” tells the story of Confederate sympathizer Mary Surratt (Wright Penn), who was tried as a conspirator in the Lincoln assassination, and Col. Frederick Aiken (McAvoy), who reluctantly agreed to defend her before a military tribunal.

Long plays a soldier who lost a limb in the Civil War and is McAvoy’s best friend and conscience.

Tom Wilkinson, Evan Rachel Wood, Kevin Kline and Alexis Bledel will join James McAvoy and Robin Wright Penn in the drama, which is being financed by the American Film Co., a venture headed by online brokerage entrepreneur Joe Ricketts.

Shooting began Monday in Savannah, Georgia.

Wright Penn plays Mary Surratt, the only female charged in the conspiracy to kill the president, and McAvoy plays Frederick Aiken, the war hero assigned to defend her. Wilkinson will play Reverdy Johnson, the former attorney general who as U.S. Senator is the mentor to the young lawyer, and sympathetic to Surratt. Wood plays Surratt’s daughter, Anna, and Kline plays Lincoln’s War Secretary Edwin Stanton. Bledel plays Aiken’s wife, Catherine Morgan

More recent casting news for James McAvoy on the Conspirator

James McAvoy and Robin Wright Penn are set to star in the Robert Redford-directed “The Conspirator,” the period drama based on true events following the assassination of President Lincoln.

Pic, for which an October start date has been set, marks the first financed by the American Film Co., which is headed by online brokerage entrepreneur Joe Ricketts.

Redford will produce with Wildwood Enterprises’ Greg Shapiro and Bill Holderman and American Film Co. execs Robert Stone, Webster Stone and Brian Falk.

James Solomon penned the script. Redford last directed “Lions for Lambs.”

Wright Penn will play Mary Surratt, the only woman among a group charged with conspiring to kill the president. McAvoy will play Frederick Aiken, an idealistic young war hero who reluctantly defends Surratt and in the process comes to believe she is innocent.
