GQ: So do you have a second to talk hoops?
Genesis Rodriguez: Yes! I’m getting my nails done, actually, so I love the fact that I’m talking basketball at a nail salon.

GQ: You get your nails done all the time, at least according to your Instagram account.
Genesis Rodriguez: I get them done every two weeks. You watch, in the Playoffs I’m going to do Heat nails. And Lang, I know we’re going to talk about the Heat, but where should we start? The last time we talked, I had some concerns. But should I have any concerns right now?

GQ: I think the answer is no.
Genesis Rodriguez: It’s ridiculous what’s going on right now. It’s something out of this world. LeBron is like the best on the planet, man.

GQ: Lately, at least to me, they’ve looked more like a team than they have at any point since LeBron arrived. They play together and all the parts fit, and the guys look like they understand their roles. They look like a team instead of just three stars and a bunch of other guys.
Genesis Rodriguez: Yeah, it’s not just The LeBron Show. They are playing to the caliber of what a championship team should look like. The Heat would always sort of get it going by the time the Playoffs came around, and then start playing with heart and playing together, but now I feel exactly what you feel. People are right now all playing to their potential. Really, where do you start? If LeBron wasn’t playing alien-esque basketball, more people would probably notice how well Dwyane Wade has been playing. He was excellent in February.

GQ: We talked about this last time, but I really think he was pacing himself a little bit. And now he’s at the point where he’s turning it up and we’re seeing the old Dwyane Wade, basically.
Genesis Rodriguez: Yeah. I don’t even mind the nickname now: “WoW.” (laughs)

GQ: What do you think about him giving himself that nickname?
Genesis Rodriguez: I mean, let the guy call himself whatever he wants to call himself. I think it’s fine.

GQ: Are people allowed to give themselves nicknames?
Genesis Rodriguez: I don’t know how to respond to that. I’ve never given myself a nickname. I wouldn’t know where to go.

GQ: I think Kobe came up with Black Mamba.
Genesis Rodriguez: He did, didn’t he? That’s such a Kobe thing to do (laughs).

GQ: What was your take on the Harlem Shake video that the Heat put together?
Genesis Rodriguez: I loved it. I think it has like 30 million views right now, and probably about a million are from me. I can’t get enough of it. I love when I see a team—I don’t care if it’s a high school team, a swim team—bond like that and act a fool, I think it connects them. Making a fool out of yourself and putting it on the internet is one of the best bonding experiences you could have. Did you see the Minnesota retaliation video? That was hysterical.

GQ: Yeah, that was pretty funny. Which was your favorite Miami costume?
Genesis Rodriguez: Mario Chalmers as Super Mario was too funny. And obviously LeBron’s was really funny and he got really into it. I’d like to see him host something like Saturday Night Live.

GQ: He did a couple of years ago, like four or five years ago.
Genesis Rodriguez: HE DID! Are you kidding me? Where was I living, in Columbia? I never saw that.

GQ: All I remember was a skit where he was a Solid Gold dancer. And wait, is that a euphemism I’ve never heard or did you actually live in Columbia four years ago?
Genesis Rodriguez: I did, I lived in Columbia. It was a fluke time when I didn’t live in the States. I would literally watch “The Office” episodes on rerun all day. If I could ever watch any basketball, it was a miracle.

GQ: Do you think the Heat are peaking too early? Should that be a concern?
Genesis Rodriguez: I don’t think so. Remember back in the day, when there was a great team, they would prove it throughout the season and also in the Playoffs, and I feel like that’s the way they should play. As fans it’s exciting and it gives us something to look forward to. And we’re still a young team, so for something like this to happen it’s great for the younger guys on the team.

GQ: I’m an Atlanta Braves fan, and they’d always be really good during the regular season, and then they’d wind down heading into the Playoffs and get beat every year.
Genesis Rodriguez: That’s such a bummer, dude. And in baseball there’s so many more games to watch and invest in, and then to lose during the Playoffs, it’s so disheartening.

GQ: Well, thanks for rubbing it in. How many games in a row do you think they’re going to win? As we’re talking they’re up to 16. [They reached 18 on Sunday evening with a 105-91 win over Indiana.]
Genesis Rodriguez: I don’t know. I don’t think we should be chasing a number right now. As long as they’re playing with heart, which they are, there’s very little to nitpick. Last time we talked I had a lot to nitpick. This time I don’t have as much to nitpick, and it’s not due to the wins. If I were to nitpick, we could be a little more careful of the turnovers, which we saw when they played Minnesota last week. And unfortunately, the only player I can nitpick is Chris Bosh.

GQ: (laughs) Come on, leave Bosh alone!
Genesis Rodriguez: I don’t meant to pick on him, and I think he’s a excellent player, but I just wish he would put a little bit more effort and energy into the first halves of the games. But other than that they’re playing so well. Battier’s outside shooting is great, but also his hustle and his defense is really good. Chris Andersen, I don’t think we spoke about him last time.

GQ: He wasn’t even on the team last time!
Genesis Rodriguez: What a spark he’s brought. He brings the defensive presence that we really needed.

GQ: He’s also a little bit scary.
Genesis Rodriguez: I like it! I absolutely like it. To me, we needed that. We needed someone defensively to block shots and rebound and to be a tough guy inside to take care of stuff.

GQ: He didn’t even really need a costume in the Harlem Shake video.
Genesis Rodriguez: Hell no, man. He’s The Birdman. Do you want me to tell me which team I’m concerned about? The Pacers.

GQ: They don’t get a lot of attention from casual fans but they’re playing really well right now—they’re 7-3 in their last 10.
Genesis Rodriguez: Defensively, I think that’s the only team that scares me in either Conference. They’re all excellent defensive players. I feel like for whatever reason they talk a lot, and that can affect the Heat. So dear Heat: Do not listen to what any other team has to say. You are the sh*t.

GQ: Last thing: What can we say about the way LeBron is playing right now? He’s playing the best basketball he’s ever played, and that’s saying something when the guy is already a two-time MVP.
Genesis Rodriguez: I really can’t compare him to anyone. It’s a beautiful thing. He’s blazing his own path. Seriously, man, I want to know what he eats. I need to have those powers.

GQ: I don’t think he eats, like, food. I think he must eat something like minerals and elements. He might even eat kryptonite or something. Maybe we can get him to go to Versailles with us if they make the Finals.
Genesis Rodriguez: Yes, that would be awesome!
